George from Gardening Club, and his little brother, have been getting stuck in to some hard graft with their dad - a professional gardener (who built us a raised bed last year 😁) - and transformed their garden into a football pitch! Two very happy boys 😀

They sound delicious!

Plant sunflowers now for a summer display. You could sow straight into the ground now - in a sunny spot. Protect the seedlings by placing the top of a plastic bottle over them at night. Support with a cane when tall. Seedheads make a tasty snack for birds too

Grow marigolds next to tomatoes as companion plants: the marigolds are said to keep away whitefly and they will attract bees for pollination. Add basil too for better-flavoured tomatoes.

Are these straggly, wrinkled things that arrived in the post really going to grow into scrumptious strawberries?! Yes, they are! Buying bareroot strawberries is so much cheaper. Soak roots for 20 mins and then plant out. Keep the faith 🍓🍰

Missing so many things

Children or not, our corridors are never silent. Whose missing these two?

Make a wildlife pond by placing an old washing up bowl into a hole in the ground, put a layer of gravel at the bottom, add rocks, bricks or logs as stepping stones for creatures, fill with rain water and put in oxygenating plants. Soften the edges with stones and plants.

Another beautiful day and how lovely to see 7 newly hatched goslings swimming with their parents in Barclay Park lake. Just out for their daily stroll too.

Grow tropical! Open up a ripe mango, remove the flesh, open the husk carefully (mine was already cracked open) and remove the inner seed and its protective paper. Wrap in a wet paper towel, put in a plastic bag for 1-2 weeks to germinate then plant in soil

Careers Day

To aid this, we send our students to the award winning Careers Day based at our Trust Partner School (Sir John Lawes School) and that has been recognised nationally by the British Chamber of Commerce.

This careers day goes from strength to strength and offers our Year 12 students an amazing opportunity to engage with over 80 organisations, both Blue Chip and local employers whose calibre is ensured with at least 7 of the top 10 Graduate Employers (as listed by The Times) being represented.  Held in March, the day comprises of a morning carousel of over 50 talks from companies about careers in their sector, from which students select those that they are most interested in attending.  Then in the afternoon our students approach companies on their stands in the Careers Fair to discuss specific opportunities that are available extending from school leaver and Apprenticeship programmes to post Graduate Schemes.  Many students each year are successful in securing work experience and mentoring from those attending.
