Music

Key Stage 3

Music is taught once a week to every student in Years 7, 8 and 9.  The new scheme of work covers a range of areas of music including:  Musical Futures, African Music, Film Composition, Performing Popular Songs as an Ensemble, and Musical Theatre.

Key Stage 4

We offer Music as an option at GCSE where students follow the WJEC board. A Key Stage 4 Music student attends weekly 20 minute free peripatetic lessons on their chosen instrument. In addition to GCSE, Level 3 BTEC Music is offered at Key Stage 5, which follows the Edexcel syllabus.

The Music department offers an extensive range of equipment and resources, including our own recording studio and numerous rehearsal areas.

There are currently two school choirs: the whole school choir and the chamber choir, as well as a school band, all of which meet for weekly rehearsals. In addition to these extra-curricular activities, weekly lunchtime concerts are also run to allow students from any musical background - be it a vocalist, rock band or instrumentalist - to gain experience in performing.

The Christmas and Summer Concerts are main musical events within the school calendar where musicians perform. This year the choirs have already participated in a Cancer Charity Fundraising event at All Saints’ Church in Hertford as well as in Hoddesdon Town Centre.  In addition events put on as a Performing Arts Faculty, such as the Whole School Pantomime and Whole School Production, are also an opportunity to become involved in performing at the academy.
