We are a successful department that thrives on new challenges, discovering contemporary and innovative artists/photographers and practicing a wide variety of techniques.
Art is essential to the general education of all students. It provides the means by which all students may express their ideas and feelings about themselves and the world around them. It trains hand-to-eye control and how to understand the nature of shape, colour, and texture and to realise the possibilities for expression and experimentation in a wide range of materials.
The practical nature of the subject presents the student with opportunities to visualise problems and explore his or her attitude to these and questions posed in everyday life. An understanding of composition, scale and proportion is not limited only to Art.
We have three Art professionals who bring to the department a plethora of skills, experience and enthusiasm. We have two specialist Art rooms, a specialist Photography suite with Apple Mac computers and a well equipped darkroom, a kiln room and a Year 12/13 Art private study area.
The department prides itself on offering an excellent array of student experiences, including trips and a strong gifted and talented programme, supported by extra curricula clubs.
Within our Fine Art specialisms we practice photography, printmaking, observational drawing, installation, painting, mixed media, and ceramics etc.
We follow the AQA schemes of work for both GCSE and A Level
We are one of the few schools in the country to have been awarded Arts Mark Gold and we have now retained this award for twelve years.
We aim to offer every student a broad knowledge of Art skills and Art history. We will continue to raise the profile of Art and Photography and extend the ‘reach’ of the Art Department within the School and local community.
